Robert E. Barnett, 93, died April 24 in Anchorage. Barnett was born May 12, 1915, in a logging camp on the outskirts of Gresham, Ore. His father came to Alaska to work in engine service on the Alaska Railroad in 1921 and the rest of the family came in 1922. Barnett held many odd jobs during his school years, including working at the local canneries, starting at age 11. He graduated from Anchorage High School in 1934 and worked in the gold-mining industry in Flat and as an engineer on the Alaska Railroad. Barnett married his wife, Bernadine, in Fairbanks in1941. In 1948 he established Spenard Plumbing and Heating. In 1964, the couple moved to Homer, where Barnett operated an air taxi business and fished commercially until 1975. [Sep2009]
