End of the Trail

Notices in this section are limited to names of those who have achieved pioneer status through many years in the North, or who are otherwise of unquestioned importance in the daily scene.

Mattie Leckwold, 85, died December 28 in Palmer. She first arrived in Alaska in 1913, landing at Knik. She and her husband later homesteaded in the Matanuska Valley, meanwhile carrying mail by horse and dog teams from Knik to points in the Matanuska Valley. She later lived in Anchorage, working for the Alaska Railroad, at Elmendorf Air Force Base and for Pacific Northern Airlines. [Apr1979]
