Joseph Pilcher, well-known Alaska mountaineer and outdoorsman, died at an Anchorage hospital November 8. Born in Germany, he came to the United States to 1925 and to Alaska in 1944. He was a carpenter by trade, and worked on projects out on the Aleutian Chain before moving to Anchorage in 1947. A charter member of the Alaska Rescue Group and the Mountaineering Club of Alaska, he took part in many rescue operations, including those for the John Day party when the climbers were injured on Mt. McKinley in 1960. He also led winter trips along the old mail trail through the Chugach Mountains, and supervised construction of shelter huts at Crow Pass and above the Eklutna Glacier.
