John H. Walmer, 93, who came north to mine gold in 1910, died January 27 at the Pioneers' Home in Sitka. He first went over the Chilkoot Trail to Dawson, then to Norm and later to Fort William H. Seward where he was a bugler during World War I. He worked as a cook at the Sitka Pioneers" Home after the War and then opened a restaurant in Sitka. In the late 1920s, he and his wife, Mary, opened the U and I Cafe in Juneau. He was later appointed clerk of the U.S. District Court in Juneau, a post In which he served many years. [June1981]
