Jess D. Lander, former Alaska Territorial legislator, died at the age of 68 in Seattle August 19. Lander, who had served four terms in the Territorial Legislature after his first election in 1938, also was Speaker of the body for two sessions. In earlier years in Anchorage he operated a barber shop and managed the Anchorage baseball team. In the 1930's, Lander operated a barber shop, billiard hall and restaurant in Fairbanks. He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Betty Haynes, of Fairbanks, three grandchildren, and two sisters in California. He was a member of the Pioneers of Alaska, the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. [Nov1960]
