George Gryc, 88, died April 27. A geologist who worked for the U.S. Geological Survey from 1943 to 1995, he was recognized as the preeminent Alaska geologist of his day. He led projects ranging from evaluating hydrocarbon resources on the North Slope to organizing the USGS field response after the 1964 earthquake. His research was crucial to the discovery of oil at Prudhoe Bay as well as the technical and logistical aspects of building the trans-Alaska oil pipeline. Many of his projects fostered international scientific cooperation, including the Circum-Pacific Map Project, for which he served as general chairman. [Sep2008]
