E. B. Collins, 94, first speaker of the Territorial Legislature, mayor of Fairbanks from 1934 to 1938, pioneer district attorney and interior miner, died at Fairbanks in late September. Arriving in Alaska in 1904, Collins floated down the Yukon to the mouth of the Tanana, then proceeded to the Fairbanks district. He mined on Bear and Fairbanks Creeks. Legislation establishing the Pioneers Home was enacted during Collins' first term as Speaker of the House. He established a law practice in Fairbanks in 1932. In honor of his long service, Collins and his wife, Tillie, were the first pioneers registered in the new Pioneers" Home at Fairbanks. The pioneer attorney helped Will Rogers and Wiley Post gas their plane for the ill-fated flight to Barrow in 1935, when they landed at his Harding Lake cabin. Surviving is his widow, a resident of the Fairbanks' Pioneers Home.
