Bill "Montana Bill" Sakieff, 86, who homesteaded land along Montana Creek, died January 25 in Juneau. Over the years. Juneau grew around his homestead and his small green home eventually became something of a tourist attraction. He was born in Russia and came to Alaska, via Canada, about 1935. The Juneau Empire reported he "dabbled in many trades, including gambling, according to reports." [June1981]
